Msaki Biography

In 1988, Asanda Lusaseni Mvana was born in East London, Eastern Cape. Her grandmother was a composer, and her father was a DJ. After one year, she left Nelson Mandela University. Mvana attended Rhodes University and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts. She joined the East London-based alternative rock band The Patience and the Cape Town-based electro-experimental duo Johnny Cradle in 2008. She played guitar and sang lead for the Grahamstown duo Kate and I the year after, in 2009.

Msaki studied music at North Carolina, a state in the United States, in 2012. In 2013, she started her own record company, One Shushu Day Artistry, and released Nal’ithemba, her extended play debut, which was produced by Cobus Van Dyk. She received a standing ovation at the 7th Standard Bank Ovation Awards in 2016 and took first place with a Gold Award at the Cape Town Fringe. Her 2016 single, “Imfama Ziyabona,” debuted on the Metro FM Charts and spent 19 weeks there. South Africa saw the release of her debut record Zaneliza: How The Water Moves in June 2017.

Nduduzo Makhathini was a co-producer of the record. She performed at the National Art Festival in order to promote her CD further. Zaneliza: How The River Moves was nominated for Best Adult Contemporary Album at the 23rd South African Music Awards. Her track “Pearls To Swine,” which was released in November 2019 and features TRESOR and Kid X, received a nomination for Best Made Video. Msaki issued a double single on October 22 called “Fetch Your Life II” and “Mntakababa” with Kabza De Small and Focalistic. Her two projects, Platinumb Heart Beating and Platinumb Heart Open, were released on November 19th.

Education

Asanda always managed to include music into her studies. She joined an alternative rock band in 2008 while enrolled in an East London course for visual art and design. She also spent some time making music in a friend’s studio around this time. She continued her studies in visual art at Grahamstown, where she also started her first band. Afterwards, in 2010, she relocated to the University of Leeds in England as an exchange student.

Career

Out of more than 900 candidates from around the world, Msaki was chosen in 2012 to study with 30 other artists, musicians, and writers in North Carolina, USA. She started her music career when she got back to South Africa and signed with her own independent label, One Shushu Day Artistry.

Msaki independently recorded and distributed the Cobus Van Dyk-produced EP Nal’ithemba in 2013. In 2016, she then used her label One Shushu Day Artistry to release her debut album, Zaneliza: How the Water Moves. Among other well-known performers, Msaki has performed on stages alongside Nduduzo Makhathini, Salif Keita, Pops Mohammed, Madala Kunene, Vusi Mahlasela, Angelique Kidjo, Siphokazi Mohapi, Thandiswa Mazwai, and the Blk Jks.
